The I-485 timeline, step by step
What happens between the day USCIS receives your adjustment of status application and the day the card arrives.
1. Receipt (week 1–3)
USCIS cashes your fee and mails a receipt notice (Form I-797C). Online filers see it almost immediately in their account. The receipt number (three letters + ten digits) is the key you will use everywhere, including Visaline.
2. Biometrics (week 3–8)
Most applicants get a biometrics appointment at an Application Support Center. If you gave fingerprints for a recent EAD or other benefit, USCIS may reuse them and the status jumps to "Fingerprint fee was received" without an appointment.3. Work and travel documents (month 3–7)
If you filed I-765 and I-131 together with the I-485, the combo card usually arrives well before the green card itself. Many people in the Visaline community report this as the first moment the wait feels real.4. The quiet middle (month 4–14)
This is where cohorts matter. Some cases go to "ready to be scheduled for an interview" and stay there; employment-based cases are often decided without an interview at all. Watching people who filed the same month at the same office is the only realistic way to know whether your wait is normal.5. Requests for Evidence
An RFE pauses the clock. Typical triggers: an expired medical (I-693), a missing birth-certificate translation, or a job-offer confirmation for employment-based cases. Respond well before the deadline and log the dates on your timeline so others can see how long the RFE added.6. Decision
"New card is being produced" means the case is approved. The physical card typically arrives within two to three weeks. This guide is general information, not legal advice. For your own case, talk to a licensed immigration attorney.
